These are reading strategies for a Festival Article

Objective: This is an exercise to get the students to think about their own culture and the culture in the target language. It also will develop their leadership skills, public speaking skills and working as a team. The reward is a fun party at the end, for which the students are 100% responsible.

This is a KWL chart will be used before and after reading. What we know, and what we want to learn will be used before, and we will conclude with what we learned. Students will work in groups and discuss what kinds of festivals are held in the U.S, and what they have be exposed to before. Then in a group discussion the class will discuss what they expect to learn from the lesson. After students have completed the first two categories they can present their findings, and for homework they can do further research and consult their parents. This helps students think about their culture and the one they are studying. This enables students to compare and contrast, and anticipate the topics that will be covered in the lesson. KWL Chart Sample

During reading, the students will take notes on this graphic organizer. They can read in small groups, practicing reading out loud and pronunciation. Taking is one paragraph at a time. A group leader will summarize the information learned, alternating leaders for every paragraph read. Please refer to page 42 for more information.

Durring Reading GO

As an after-reading activity, students will create their own festival based on the knowledge they have gained. They will organize the class party in a group, each group being responsible for one particular component, which matches the During Reading GO. They will create invitations, recipes, music and other components that are needed for this party in the target language and during the party, they can present what they did. They can use the Sample Learning Log to document what it is that they did exactly, what they gained from doing this and how others can appreciate and share what they have learned.
